Just wondering, isn't anyone involved in any projects or activities P5 related or other currently? I know the forum has enthusiasts from the 4 corners of the globe. Something must be happening somewhere? So why not post your project, query, piece of trivia, video, driving experience, whatever, and keep the Board as a distraction to counter the covid gloom that the media seem to thrive on.

No pics but here's my recent efforts.
A while ago I aquired a "new" steering wheel that had never been fitted to a car but it had spent fifty years or so bouncing around parts stores and then a while in our club store. Nicks, scratches, small dings all over it but no cracks unlike my original which I had repaired a couple of years ago. I had used a good quality epoxy putty but some of the cracks had returned. The new wheel seemed to have a satin rather than gloss finish which seemed a bit different as all I have seen have been gloss, perhaps 50 years or so tends to polish satin to gloss but I decided to repaint it with satin black epoxy enamel which came up really nice and it matches the instrument binnacle.
Second job was to do something about the reverse detent not always working. It's a bit disconcerting to accidentally select reverse at an intersection. I had àlready replaced the plastics on both the gear stick and the lever that works on the selectors however the spherical socket that the gear stick pivots on was quite worn and sloppy so this seemed like a possible cause. I know these are available but I thought I would have a go at machining one as I has a suitable piece of plastic. The first attempt was too loose off the lathe but the next one is a nice tight fit, snug once popped over the ball but not tight. The under side has a lug that has a pin that stops the lever from rotating so that side needed the diameter machined on the mill. Fitted back together ànd the detent works reliably. But I couldn't select reverse at all.
Out with the socket again to reshape the top of the socket to get a bit more travel and that seemed to solve the problem but sometimes it would jump out of gear so nothing for it than to pull up the floor to reset the front lever. It only needed a small adjustment to fully engage reverse, first and third must be a bit less sensitive. One thing that was nice to see was the mods I had made to the oil filler and other leak points on the top of the box are dry. Floor back in and job done.
I got a call from the reconditioners last week to say the spare head is remachined and my block will be bored this week so perhaps a blog with pictures may be forthcoming......

Note the water pump to take the P6B type used with aircon, accommodating a viscous coupling and 13 bladed fan, also the third crankshaft pully for the aircon pump.

I have finished a complete brake overhaul, all new rubbers and new Goodridge hoses, was a bit delayed over Christmas with so many places shut for 2 weeks. Got fed up with polishing the copper brake pipes so have painted them black along the underside and red under the bonnet as they had to come off to remove the servo - appologies to the purists ! I have used silicone brake fluid for a long time, which is now £30 per litre. I had a litre on the shelf in the garage and I bought a new litre. I put the older litre through the system several times as there was the usual problem with air locks in the rear cylinders. When I was happy with the feel of the pedal I chased the rotated fluid out with fresh and now have a hard pedal with very little free play. Many years ago I bought some Unipart brake pads at the Beaulieu auto jumble, I had never opened them and found that 2 were Unipart and 2 were Ferodo, fortunately I had another spare set so the others have gone back in the cupboard. It is suprising how little brake fluid there is in the system, probably a third to a half being in the reservoir. In previous re-rubbers I have used brake fluid for lubricating the seals, but this time I used Girling type red grease and the operation of the master cylinder was noticably better.

Keep it going guys. 👍 It's nice to see fresh projects, interests and diversions happening. Don't be shy of throwing in a description outlining the project/interest or where you're heading with it. It's all good stuff. I always look forward to seeing what other enthusuasts are doing.

Just been getting my original engine, rebuilt to 3.9, ready to install on Thursday, with refurbished and upgraded BW35 and new torque converter. A couple of queries. 1. Just wondering, what was upgraded in the BW35 Sam? 2. One other query, the oil pump base that projects the filter out on an angle, isn't that item the wrong part?

It looks like it will foul the subframe? here is a pic of mine and that is a SD1 pump.

Enigmas. The bespoke upgrade on my box; basically the front end innards for a BW66, with its bigger input shaft, improved clutch and pump, upgrade of clutch plates at the rear, Kevlar brake bands, and a Jaguar torque converter (as used with a BW66) to help cope with extra power/ torque of my upgraded engine (estimate at 210 - 220 h.p.). The BW66 is an upgraded BW65 (latter used on late P6B and the SDI etc) to take the power of a Jaguar XJ6 engine.
The timing chain cover is the one that was on the car when I bought it. It is in fact the same as a P6B, thus:
I do have a spare cover but it is the same.

Sam AFAIK, there are 3 front pumps and 3 torque convertors that are available for the BW35 transmission. The smallest pump input shaft and torque convertor is used on MK3 P5s. The intermediate size is used on P5Bs The largest size in the UK I have absolutely no idea, but in OZ were fitted to BW35s on P76 V8s and virtually all BW40s and BW51s. Lots of stuff is interchangeable if you know what you're doing. Complete BW40 geartrains can be fitted to early BW35 cases. The rear servo is a weak area that uses only 2 studs to secure it on a fragile section of the case. BW51s have a 3 bolt servo that can be adapted giving the servo greater rigidity with the case. It's definitely worthwhile fitting if you have access to one. Similarly the BW51 sprag (one way clutch) is stronger (having more individual sprags within) and is a direct replacement fit. Note the 3 bolt BW51 rear servo as opposed to the 2 bolt version. Note the broken section of the BW case. With a torquey V8 the 2 bolt servo can rock back and forth on it's mounting (leverage) and crack the casing, as seen below.

I'm glad it will go in with no fouling :-)
I am interested in your BHP Sam at what revs will your engine achieve 200 to 210 bhp?

Attachment DeletedYes, it does fit! Attachment DeletedTo answer you question John. Being a 'one-off' not absolutely sure as yet, probably needs to go on a rolling-road to find out once run-in, and the actual h.p. too..

Nothing much to report on the P5 front here, I did pull it out of the garage last week to allow some workmen to access the rear of my property. It struggled to start to be honest, I think the starter is failing. Is the powerlite a good upgrade? It’s almost MOT time for the 850R, doesn’t need much, a driveshaft oil seal & a couple of brake flexis & it should be happy again. The XC90 I purchased in a moment of scrapyard madness has proved to be a very good beast, it had a transmission warning on the dash when I bought it, which on searching the Volvo forum was a catastrophic multi billion pound failure of the auto box. In reality a flush & refill with some rather expensive (£11 per litre) fluid has cured that issue & it’s now done nearly 3000 miles without issue. Done very little else with the cars, but I’ve had a few really good road trips recently, my favourite being a trip up to Killin in Scotland to experience the terrain these boys had to endure youtu.be/gxuwKg3wgUEUnfortunately “the new road at Kenknock” is now private & gated so I wasn’t able to get the full experience, but had a super day out finishing off with a visit to Glasgow Transport Museum on the way back.
