As part of my overhaul I have stripped down and completely renovated my gear change linkage. Now in the process of reinstalling I found that resetting the long lever and the tie rod to the measurements shown in the WM that my rods are about 2 1/2" too long. So I set them to the P6 lengths and they appear to be correct, with minor tweaks. Anyone else found this? The I noticed that even at that setting the sliding end of the tie rod is hard against the rear of the slot - should it be adjusted to be nearer the centre of the slot to allow for engine/gearbox vibration. Nothing on this in the WM.

Yes the lengths given in the workshop manual are incorrect. There is a thread regarding this somewhere on here and the correct lengths are given.
