Hi All, I need to change a rear wheel bearing on my P5B Coupe. I’ve had oil leaking before and cleaned out the breather and changed the seals. I thought I’d got away with it but yesterday I found that oil was once again leaking. So, I plan to replace the bearing this time. I recall that the club had a special tool. Is it available please? On search I can see that others have managed to avoid using the tool with the aide of a press and other expertise, but want to explore the rover tool route first. Thanks, Mark

The special tool was made by Churchill and I believe pulls the collar off and then turns into a battering ram to fit the new collar on the shaft. I think it needs to be mounted in a very sturdy vice and would probably have to be collected in person if available as it is very heavy. Personally,I would get a competent engineering shop to turn the old collar off and then use a big press to fit the new one on. I would also heat the collar and chill the half shaft to help the process.

I have done my own rear wheel bearings, with the 'special tool' and assisted with another. My own new bearing collars were a very tight fit and took some persuading to get into place. The other one that I assisted with they went on much easier. If you contact the chairman (Ray Pickett), whose details are in the magazine, he should be able to help you. Getting the half shafts out can be a challenge if they are stuck. I used a scissor jack and wound it out untill it popped !
You could possibly do it without the 'special tool' by cutting the old bearing collar with a Dremel, although I have never done this and do not know how easy it would be, but care would have to be taken not to Dremel into the half shaft. A scaffolding pole could possibly be used to ease the new bearing collar into place.

A photo tutorial outlining the stages of this task would be invaluable for any hands-on enthusiasts wanting to do this job. So if someone is undertaking the replacement of a rear half shaft axle bearing, please record the details with a camera.

There is a set of instructions with supporting photos, which George and I put togester. It is with Ray Picketts who holds the said tool, which is owned by the Club. Sam
