Hi Rover p5b 1972 I overhauled both cylinder heads and cleaned all hydraulic tappets, all tappets were quiet before removal. having started some tappet not working normal any suggestions on what I can do. Already have new oil and filter.

The tappets have to fill with oil to work properly. From memory run the engine at 2500 revs and they should quieten down, but have a look in the workshop manual

If they are old/used tappets and they are going back into the engine fitted to the original camshaft then they need to be fitted to the same camshaft lobes they were removed from. If this is not done the camshaft lobes will be damaged. New lifters can be fitted randomly to a used camshaft. Old used lifters need to be matched to the lobe they came from.
If the lifters are badly worn the base will be convex, this both reduces the required preload for quiet tappet operation and further damages camshaft lobes if they've been mixed around.
