Can anyone shed some light on why my petrol pump is ticking over very fast . The car has been sitting for lack of use and I wonder whether there is a blockage in the petrol pipe and the pump is fighting to push the petrol through.
Model 3 Litre Mk1 auto.
Your thoughts would be most welcome.

Assuming you have a Facet style electric fuel pump...
Probably the opposite. The pump slows down when it has generated pressure, so a fast running pump indicates either no fuel getting to the pump, or that the fuel line between the pump and float chambers is empty. Make sure there's fuel in the tank, the fuel reserve is off, and run the pump for a minute or so. Is there fuel at the float chambers?

Hi If the car has been sitting for a while, I thought I should perhaps suggest that an in line filter before the fuel reaches the float chambers is a good tip, so check you have one of these. This would be my approach: -See if the float bowls are full, as a stuck float valve here can cause the pump to just keep going and start to dump fuel into the engine. - If not, disconnect the line from the tank at the pump end and see if you can get fuel to that point either by gravity or sucking to draw the fuel through. If the fuel is much more than 6 months old, I'd drain the tank and put some fresh E5 in. Modern fuels are not good at sitting around. If you can't get fuel through you have a gummed up / rusty tank or blocked line. -Once you have fresh fuel being delivered to the pump with no obvious leaks, connect the tank line back to the pump and disconnect the delivery line. Run the pump and see if it is actually capable of doing it's job. If it can't draw fuel, the valves in the pump may have perished. If you do get fuel pumping out, then reconnect the system and check delivery to the float chambers making sure the in line filter is not full of rubbish. Hope this helps. We have this problem regularly at the classic car garage I volunteer at, usually with cars that have been asleep for a while.

Thank you for your comments.
I am getting petrol in the float chamber but should it be right to the very top. The float when pushed down moves upwards so is o.k.

The fuel should below the top of the float chamber as the float displaces a lot of fuel.
