I have a question pertaining to my Rover. P5 MKIA 1962. When I turn on the repeating signal / turn signal, the relay inside the instrument binnacle clicks slowly and heats up (as it should) to the extent that smoke is coming out of it (which it should absolutely not). This happens when blinking on the left hand side. On the right hand side it does not work at all, even if I swap the leads. Does this mean the repeater relay is getting old and tired OR does it mean it is working under excessive load - for instance that the light bulbs are of the wrong type, that the socket in the lamp is conducting electricity poorly or that the earth is weak so that current is not getting through the wires ?

Fault found - the workshop that painted my car had taken off the indicator lights and managed to enter earth cable on rear NOS lamp to the terminal coming from the flasher relay. I found out by taking off the aluminium plate that house the bulb for repeater light and brake light + stop light. Effectively, a short circuit had been established. I set it right, and correcting an earth issue on the flasher light both sides front and replacing a broken bulb on the other rear made it all work again.
Lessons to be learned: 1. never assume a garage will know how to fit electric leads ... 2. self-done is well-done ...
Good thing is that I learned a lot about the installations and replaced lights and rubber gaskets in poor condition with nice items. So, the car has been given an overall improvement. And that gives all the pleasure :-)
