I've placed a link below to a brief Youtube video by Dr Jordan Petersen (clinical psychologist, author and academic) and Dr Bjorn Lomborg (statistician, author and commentator on Enviromental Stewardship) that outlines a clear, reasoned, unemotive and generally unreported perspective on the current world focus and costs (both human and financial) associated with both solar and wind derived electrification energy.

I thought it was interesting regarding an article on TV about the rise in wood burning fires in the UK, due to rising energy prices. Apparently their combined pollution output is greater than all the vehicles in the UK.
Also on Grand Designs it was noted that the combined use of concrete in one year would make it, if it were a country, the worlds third greatest polluter.
Some things are not so black and white as they would have us believe.

A lot depends on the stove David there are loads of rubbish ones made in the far east which are not Clean Air or Defra-approved fitted without being checked! as it stands you can't (shouldn't) fit a Wood Stove without being fitted by a Hetas engineer. I fitted one 3 weeks ago it is made in England and is 87% efficient with a built-in Catalytic Converter it was not cheap :-( you get what you pay for. No one in my area who is Hetas registered would supply the stove I wanted or check my installation so I had to go through Building Regs to get an Approved Certificate £142 for 15mins for the inspector . What you burn is important "NO CHIPBOARD" or "Unseasoned Wood", chipboard, treated timber also gives off Toxic Fumes!

We in rural Australia use a wood burner for heat. The wood comes from dead trees on our block which would otherwise biodegrade into CO2 and ash. Thus, apart from the energy used to cut and split the wood, we are carbon neutral.
The other issue is the other components of wood smoke. I have a small twinge of conscience there, but as others have said, try to avoid burning inadequately seasoned wood.
We do of course have 5kw of solar panels generating 30-40kWh per day almost every day. Without doing the calculation, I am pretty sure that they have more than paid for the energy costs of their manufacture.
