I am determined to make my DG box on my 3-litre last a lifetime. I certainly do not want to be pulling out the engine and gearbox to refurbish it when I am 80, and I don't have the room to lift the car off the subframe.
So this is how I drive. I set off in 2nd gear as normal. Before the DG box can change up to top at the ridiculously low speed of 15 mph, I engage 2nd gear hold with the column toggle stalk. Then once I am doing around 30mph, I get off the accelerator and release the 2nd gear hold at the same time. 9 times out of 10, the DG box changes up just as the engine revs have fallen to the right speed for a no-load, and no-jerk change.

I too want to last the gearbox as long as possible. I to set off in Drive. I press the accelerator pedal in a slow motion with the increase of speed. In that way the second gear stays engaged till the moment I lift de accelerator. Only on small roundabouts or in slow city-traffic I practice the procedure you describe to prevent the gearbox from continuous changing up and down. I also had the gearchange points for the intermediate hold adjusted to lower speeds, it now changes up from first to second at 30 km/h (was 50 km/h - 30 mph), from second tot top around 70 km/h (that was around 90 mph).
