hi, ive spent the last six months or so getting my 3 litre mk2 back on the road after being layed up for a long while.anyway its always started easily but ive never really driven it far due to lack of mot.today was mot day ,it started easily as always i decided to give it a 30-40 minute run prior to mot and all went well.got to mot garage stopped car and then it wouldnt start again! ended up flattening battery...anyway got a tow home recharged battery and 3 hours later turned car over and it started first time! any ideas why anybody?

Faulty coil? I remember I had to deliver a car once when I worked in the auction business. After 20-30 minutes of driving it would stop as if it ran out of petrol. After waiting 10 mins it would restart and so on. I was told it was a faulty coil and it would conk out on me. Not a very safe journey. It might be worth checking the easy jobs first.

No both wil remain full usually - switch to reserve to test (if you have twin pumps) or disconnect the pipe at carb end to ceheck fuel issues
You should be able to hear it ticking as well 1 evet 15 sec or so.
Tesr coil by substitition - as also condensor

If its pumping petrol it should start - it could be ignition related so try the usual spark related tests.
It may just be dizzy problem eg earthing, condensor, rota arm.
These engines usually start very easily even with numerous faults (even head gasket!)

Another thought given the lack of use - stale petrol? How old is it? Have you got any additives in?

Sounds electrical to me. Check the coil connections for integrity and polarity and/or substitute another coil.

That's exactly what I was saying. It results in the symptons described, easy COLD start but absolute b*****r when HOT. Hope it's solved your problem.
