hi, whats the best way of making sure i havent got an airlock in my cooling system? ive recently refilled the system and allthough it doesnt appear to be overheating its leaking quite a bit from the header tank over flow pipe!

Disconnect the heater return pipe whilst the engine is running - but make sure you keep the header tank topped up - HOWEVER ...........
These engines/rads do not air lock easily - the symptoms are classic head gasket failure which is not unusual at all!
Hope its the first one!

No not really as its too soon - try the heater hose trick. Did you check the thermostat?

The one that runs from the heater box through pipe aling the top of the exhaust manifold to the pipes/hose that connects to the pump - disconnect it at the radiator end

phil, ive took the pipe off and hopefully its cured the problem. ill be able to give it a run at the weekend to make sure! ive also ordered a new thermostat and was wondering whats the best way to refill the system if i empty it as theres a slight leak from the bottem rad hose and ill change that at the same time.

The best way is to make sure the heater is ON and disconnect the heater return hose and extend it so thats its above the heater inlet and pour water in till it flows out the top of the expansion box. Refit the hose loosely but enough to stop it leaking too much and start the engine. Top up and run at fast idle - stop and remove hose again to let more water out. Check and repeat is necessary and then run engine till top hose gets warm keeping a check on the level. It sounds a lot of trouble but it does not take very long.
Make sure the stat is 77 deg

Well done = 4 lbs - same as late P4's - never fit a higher pressure one
