Hi Phill
I dont really have much history with the car other than what I said previously.
Could well be as it was registered in Bournemouth. I have seen pictures of it at the Scottish all rover rally about 7 or 8 years ago. This doesn't necessarily mean it was local though. I could have seen the car myself years ago but I'm not sure as the pics were not mine.
I will need to find out who the owners were and where the car has been.
Sadly the previous owner was only 44 and died of a brain anurism so I bought it from his dad through the club who is also very unwell he has emphasima???
It had been lying for a year with no mot and non runner the gear shift was broken the linkage had popped off underneath and the inhibitor was not engaging. nothing when the ign key was turned. Eventually got it started after changing the gear selector linkage and persuading the inhibitor switch the car finally moved the rear brakes were bound on. The car was braying like a donkey in gear then finally it made a slow break for freedom. I was then washed as it was very dusty. The car looked great and i took it for a spin round the block to free it off. MAGIC.
The car was lying in a lock up on the south side of glasgow.
It is surprising the number that are lying about or that you hear of but a lot of them are very down at heel now I think.
There is one in Jordanhill a p5b coupe but it is dreadfull good spasres.
There are a lot of p5b's driving about glasgow mostly saloons its great.
There is a bordeaux red p5b saloon in Bearsden my dad saw it the other day still going strong.
It used to belong to an old gentleman years ago. I remember seeing it on a garage forecourt being filled with petrol. I was about 13, this is what started it all off. The sound the smell those wheels brilliant. Once I saw a coupe that was it I had to have one. There are two saloons sitting in a garage on Milngavie Road in Beggs the garage zircon blue/ bucksin both with the same registraion
one is good ( spares car) the other immaculate. Both belong to Lord Macfarlane of Bearsden ex chairman of guinness and distillers
So no chance of any spares then. You occasionally see him driving one in the summer. Apparently he always had one sitting outside his house with a brand new sitting in his garage waiting for its turn. Thats the way to do it. I used to pass this garden and car on my way to primary school everyday. Never loooking in front of me.Then one day my dad took me in to see it. They were having Sherry in the garden and were looking for the gardener to give him a glass.
There is another near me p5b coupe monotone silver birch / saddle tan interior. Not the worst in the world needs work. The owner never uses it except to go to the MOT station and back each year crazy. Its done about 100 miles in the last 6 years not good for it really.
I've heard of another p5b not sure what in Perth from a friend, a commercial recovery vehicle driver, just lying in a garage apparently its for sale oh no !!!
I need to replace the front windscreen as well
It has a huge chip in it not repairable( not in the drivers direct view)
and the laminate is rotting at the screen edges
I have some spare ones toughend I think and a friend a windscreen fitter / mechanic will put it in for me.
His first question was" How many screens do you have, please don't tell me just the one."
Not looking forward to this but needs must.
I have a new front coupe seal from rover parts of london
I also need a perfect dashboard mine has split on the passengers side just above the cold air vent.
The spares car is perfect on this side but has a small area of black tape on the drivers side. A cigar burn from the steering wheel I would imagine ****. Maybe repairable
I did have one if not two but the old boy threw them out hmmmm
I need to change the points to electronic. My P6b has lucas electronic ignition. It saves your sanity. My local spares shop wants 25 squid for a set of points, no chance!!!. I also find the coupe pinks a bit. If I retard the ignition this disappears but the car becomes lethargic. It is standard 10.5:1 comp running on 97 not always available hopeless on 95 my p6 runs an sd1 engine much better. Probably get one for the p5b eventually.
I will need to recolour and treat my seats. Will the passenger squab cover fit the drivers side as I have 2 buckskin interiors with the 2 passenger seats having better leather than both the drivers ones
Although the spares cars seats are good slight creasing but no tears need cleaning colouring and feeding and they will look great not too keen on the brand new look or baggy badly fitted new leather.
