I am buying this rover and was told it was a 1966 MkII. Does that look right? Can that even be possible??? I haven't seen her in person so these photos are all I have. It sure doesn't look right to me, but then again she will be my first. Help!!! mike i20.ebayimg.com/01/i/04/c2/3c/8e_1_b.JPG

That is a Mk2 Saloon - it may possibly a 1966 registered as Mk111 came out in Sept 1965 and there was some stock overlap.
Beware of these cars unless you know about them - they can be incredibly rusty! The bonnet is kinked badly and these cannot be straightened successfully
PS its obviously an export with the wing badge white indiactors and big overiders - NADA?

Do the over riders on the bumper look correct? I have never seen any that big.
Thanks for the reply.

It is a salloon, right and not a coupe?

Yes its a Saloon - it will have power steering and may be a 3 speed automatic Borg Warner DG box with second speed start and direct drive top. Otherwise it will be a 4 speed manual with overdrive. It will have the Westlake"high performance" cylinder head
The overiders could well have been NADA spec in 1965/66
If you can obtain a chassis number the build year can be confirmed but its highly unlikely to be 1966 although its not really important

I will have the VIN in the next 24 hours. It is a confirmed 3 speed auto.
what is second speed start and direct drive top?
I know this may seem remedial to most of you, but I have been injesting a lot of info in the last 2 weeks and haven't gotten everything yet.

To give a smooth dignified take off these auto's normally start off in second gear although kick-down and also alever on the column will give low first gear.
A clutch in the Torque converter locks it together in top gear so performance is as good as manual drive with no slippage.
I personally think the Mk11 is the best P5 - it should have Whitewall tyres
Goodluck and welcome to the forum - look on the main club website and if you do win it join our club

There is also an actual owners club in the UK whch runs this site and caters for these models
By the way this one is actually a Rover 3 Litre saloon Automatic with straight six IOE engine AKA P5 to differentiate from the later and swisher 3.5 litre V8's P5B with the Buick light alloy engine

unfortunately i'm stuck out here in southern california, but would be very interested if you had any info on rover clubs here in the states - i can't seem to find any...
was told that the V8's had better accel. but more engine problems then the original british power plant. I'll probably rekindle a timeless debate, but would be interested in your 2 cents...

The engine problems with the V8 were soley down to bad maintenance and its a far faster and more economical (if that word is possible with one of these) power plant.
The V8 Coupes are the most sought after cars over in the UK and the survivors by far outnumber the antiquated quaint six even though far fewer were made.
On of your compatriots bought a white saloon earlier this year and he joined this forum. I think he is in California.
I cannot remember his name but you should be able to identify him from the members list.
I do not know of any clubs over in the States but then I am not there!
Anyone always get more than 2 cents worth from me solicited or not

I was given the name of Adrian Bailey (either in England or Ireland) as the best source for parts. Any thoughts?

I would try Wadhams for new parts (he has a website) and David Green for secondhand ones. Bailey was one of the best in the mid 1980's but has only limited (and expensive) stocks left now. Visit the clubs main website per link at the top for other suppliers The parts supply is excellent although shipping costs will have to be added to this. Ps the saloon looks like Charcoal Grey if its still kept its original paint. Once you have the chassis number a small fee will secure its build and despatch date - visit www.heritage-motor-centre.co uk who have access to the contempoary Rover Company Ltd production records

PS Type in "California" in Search (500 days) and Greg Klaus is your nearest P5 Mk3 saloon owner

Got the VIN, it is 77800675C. Looks like it is very near the end of the production line.
