Very nice - it could be the voltage regulator either connected wrongly or it has failed.
Do not bypass it as it will ruin the gauges

Thanks very much Phil, I will have a look at that.

Glen,
The fuel, temperature and oil pressure gauges are supplied from the smiths voltage regulator. If the oil pressure is working properly then the voltage regulator is probably working. The best thing to do is to trace the wiring from the voltage regulator to the dead guages. It is likely that you will find a loose connector or a broken wire.

Actually the oil gauge picks up from the UNSTABLISED side of the regulator so receives the full 12 volts. As the sender units age they give lower and lower pressures anyway so its a shame they do run at the 10v the temp/fuel one run at

Both guages are now working. The wires had simply come of the "Instrument Stabiliser" under the dashboard. Many thanks. ;D

Phil,
I looked back at the wiring diagram in the Rover service manual and it looks like the oil pressure gauge took its power from the 10 volt voltage regulator on the MKIIb. Subsequent wiring diagrams for the MKIIC and MKIII show the oil pressure gauge taking its power from the 12V side of the voltage regulator.

Superb mate you must be very proud It looks great. All my gauges went when I wired my electric fan main to the wrong side of the fuse box and It overloaded-do you have an electric fan?

Its typical of how Rovers where built minor changes were always being made and often not publised. However there never was a Mk11b Coupe only saloons which had the optional power steering made standard. I never looked at the 3 litres wiring diagram my 11c gauge is also direct fed.
The old straight sixes were different in so many small respects to later V8's as the cost-cutting of BLMC took over from the Rover philosophy of fine engineering. Look at the hichly unsatsifactory wiring of the the theif proof coil set up which was a disgraceful bodge up

No Davie, no electric fan.

???Rather strange this oil gauage wiring as the diagrams do show the guage wired after stabilised voltage for Mk11A Coupes only yet both the gauge and sender remained the same throughout Mk2- Mk3???

I agree that it is very strange because the gauge will read lower when operated with stabilized 10 volts. All I can think of is that the three gauges might result in too high of a load for the voltage regulator under certain conditions, r.g., high oil pressure, full fuel tank, and high engine temperature. Under these conditions, the gauges draw the maximum amount of current.

Looks like a sneaky ploy to get a better reading on the gauge to me !
Nice one Glenn.........looks great ! I am sure you will relax with it once you get used to it. You are right though, it certainly is a different drive to a modern car.........much more laid back and relaxing. My only real gripe is that I feel the brakes could be a bit better !
