Sender fault - most likely bad connection to it or the gauge somewhere - however ................. It could be sticking pressure relief valve particularly if the the black sludge is present and the engine is low mileage Sort out now to ensure it is not serious

Fit an oil pressure master gauge for test purposes,Ideally at the oil light switch hole and run the engine to compare the readings from both gauges. This will then confirm or eliminate the oil pressure gauge sender unit as being the problem.

Changed oil and filter and whilst this didn't fix the problem right away, the following day the gauge was working fine and still Is.The old oil was stinking of petrol and I may have started the engine to soon after putting the new oil In but It's fixed!

Very serious and dangerous if the oil smells of petrol - the fule pump diaphram is failing and the car should not started until it sorted

Could the smell not be down to unburned fuel as the car has really only been started and left to Idle for a short time every 2-3 weeks over the winter .If my fuel pump was on It's way out wouldn't the engine be running badly-Its running fine just now with no lack of power etc?

They usually run quite well until petrol satrs pouring ou the oil veny hole. They do get more prone to vapor lock though.
Its well worth keeping a careful eye (ornose) on it though and do not run the engine for short spells without full warm up it causes greatly accelerated engine wear - its best to leave unstarted than only partially warm up the engine
