My 3 litre windscreen was a bit tired with a myriad of tiny scratches, especially in the swept areas where the wiper blades operate. In the rain, this causes an effect a bit like looking through frosted glass until the air bubbles burst, even on a perfectly clean screen. My local Autoglass centre was very unhelpful when I enquired whether they knew of any process to renovate the toughened glass so after a Google search, came up with an outfit called GlasWeld based in Gravesend, Kent. They operate a franchise system and the local guy came out to my house and has "polished" the screen to an almost new condition. It is not cheap but worth every penny as a new replacement is almost unobtainable now (according to Autoglass). The system works by generating enough heat on the surface to make the glass (supercooled liquid) flow and fill in the microscopic surface imperfections. It will deal with deeper scratches but this takes a long time and is consequently very costly. I should mention that have no connection except as a very satisfied customer.

New replacements are easily obtainable either through Autoglass, as they got mine within a week and fitted it in half a day or having them made to order. Its laminated of course
Polishing old toughened glass can cause it to shatter suddenly

Kev - They charge by the hour and the time taken depends on how much is needed to repair any damage. The hourly charge is £60 + VAT. The best thing to do is to get your local operative to give a quote. Phil - You must have a much more cooperative branch of Autoglass than I have in Tonbridge. My lot told me quite categorically that they could not get a new screen for a P5 and that they did not know of anyone who could polish out scratches. Funny that, as the bloke who came to my house to do my screen does laminated screen "star" repair jobs for Autoglass in Tonbridge! I think the polite phrase is "H**d Cr*****s" !! Sorry for the delay in replying, I've been away.
