I wonder if anyone has any tips re the installation of seatbelts in my 'new' 1962 P5 saloon? I'm after inertia reel belts both front and rear -- I'd rather use Rover parts, of course, but does anyone have a preference?
Also, any tips as to the ideal mounting points front and rear, and is it possible to fit a central lap-belt in the rear, to accomodate a third little boy in a childseat?
All suggestions gratefully received,

They are not really suitable unless for show only. These early cars were not designed to take inertia only full and static belts.
As for the rears I am not sure that built in mountings are present on such an early model and you will need to fit these using adaptors and plates. The same comment would apply to a centre lap and this should be easy to fit
Securon do a wde range of retro fit belts and fittings which are compact the rear reels could be probably hidden below the rear parcel shelf over the petrol tank.
The parcel shelf on early P5's is different to later ones, Coupes and V8's though.
The straight sixes are much less common at shows than V8's but looking at a variety of cars at them will give you some ideas. I have a Mk2 Coupe which is different at the B/C post foot to the Saloon nad again both the V8's are different even between later and early examples of them!

I have fitted inertia belts all round to my P5b coupe. The comments about 3ltr differences need to be regarded but I think the principles may apply. To the front I fitted Rover SD1 belts with the one handed action catch. This I attached using a simple bracket to the substantial metal plate that runs along the side of the seat. This has the added advantage of the buckle moving with the seat. The rear I used Citroen CX belts which are desigend for parcel shelf fitting and have a centre lap belt. The 5b has a fixing in place on the parcel shelf. If the 3ltr does not then a re inforcing plate will need to be used to stop the unit from pulling through. The P5b fixing is only a nut welded to a 2inch square plate which in turn is spot welded to the parcel shelf.

The early P5 front seats are completely different to those on Mk3 and the P5B and will not take a seat belt stalk mounting with safety in my opinion. The floor mounting must be used and this is the safer option for all cars as even the later seat frames welds do break as do the floor brackets at the rear
The rear parcel shelf is also different and has no mounting holes although these could easily be fitted as long as suitably large reinforcing plates are also fitted

Thanks very much for the tips, chaps. Looks as if the rears are ok as long as I get them mounted properly. re the fronts, if I've got this right, stalks should be ok as long as they are floor-mounted. Thanks to John for moving this thread across from the old site, I recognise the dorsetflyer id from elsewhere, you may know the car I'm talking about. Thanks to everyone, I'm sure I'll be back with more technical queries! Ian

Yes Ian I do know the car, and you're the b****r who beat me to it. My internet connection failed when I hit the 'confirm bid' button and by the time it reconnected, it was too late. That's life, at least one good thing has come out of it, you are a new member so welcome to the club.

Apologies John, I promise I will look after it. It's intended as family transport to race meetings with the nippers and maybe the odd gentle road rally. The downside is I have to sell my beautiful S1 Lancia Fulvia HF, such is life though. Good weekend, Ian

Hi all, new member so be gentle. Just purchased a P5b coupe and having rear inertia belts fitted by a friend of mine. I have bought the ones from Wadhams. they are fitting them as we speak so will have to wait and see. I know he can't fit them to the rear shelf in the original holes as the seat is too high. I think he is having to fit them further back? I need them for the kiddy seats so let's see how they turn out. I haven't had the nerve to go and see how it's going!!
