The studs on my exhaust manifolds (V8) are poor now so I need to replace them. After I have removed the manifolds the first thing that will happen when I try to remove them is that they will twist off. When I have drilled out whats left, is the thread 5/16" UNF in the manifold casting as well as the part that the clamp goes onto, or does the stud have different threads at either end?? I ask the question so that I can purchase the correct taper tap. Steve M

It is 5/16ths UNF but the problem is that unless the old stud is driled out perfectly central when retapping it will cut into one side and the other side will be left with a thin walled thread which is likely to unwind making an oval hole!
In this case you may have to cut a slot in the stud so that it can be very carefully expanded after screwing in so thats its tight.
Alternatively drill out to 3/8ths and use stepped studs although this will be weak.
A long quarter inch setsrew or bolt is often the best way as these ALWAYS undo or break off easily in future and are redaily replaced again.
Try Stainless with brass nuts as these do not seize up so readily

Thanks for that. Will try and tap it out 5/16" UNF to start with to keep things as original as possible. Steve m

Better still, get someone at quick fit to do it for you when they are not busy and it will probably cost you a tenner. Had 2 different sets done over the years by them no problem at all, they use the oxy/acet torch to heat the manifold for the extraction. They will fit the later metric SDI ones but it all still works fine!
