Hi all. Not looked at this board for ages due to a heafty work schedule but I'm adamant I'm gonna get the car back on the road for the summer so I thought I'd better see whats whats and whos who I've just got myself a ZF 4hp22 autobox and torque converter from a range rover - seemed quite reasonably priced. Have any other members attempted fitting one of these? If so is there any advice I might find usefull? I know it should bolt straight onto the back of the V8 (which is also going to be upgraded) I was wondering more about linking to the drive shaft, mounting in the tunnel and the gearlever assembly. Dan.

I did not rate the ZF box as in a Rover 820SE I owned a long time ago it started to fail expensively after only 25K miles from new

This one was working fine at 120000. What would be a suitable alternative?

Dan You will not be able to use this gearbox because it was meant to be fitted to a four wheel drive system.
You would need to change the whole back end of the box with parts that are VERY hard to come by.
Also, the 4HP22 will not put up with being neglected like the BW35 does. It needs its oil changing regularly.

Yeah I was looking at that last night. They weren't all used in 4x4s though so there must be parts out there somewhere. At the moment it ends with a splined shaft - onto which the transfer box was was bolted I presume - I could have something made up to fit it I supose. I don't really neglect the car so changing oil wouldn't be much of a problem

They were used in BMW's and Jaguars too I think - and the ambulances and riot vans.

I bought one from a jag breakers for £75, great I thought!...not so.
There were 2 problems, one was the speedo drive, these were an optical pickup on the rear axle and I don't have a clue where to start to set that up on a P5. Secondly the rear end of the box was wrong, a local auto box rebuilders told me to get the correct rear end set up involves having the whole box stripped down and new parts fitted, you can't just bolt the correct bit on. Costs were far too high for this so I sold it back to the breakers at a loss...
The BMW 5 series has the box but I think you will run into similar problems. The only one with all the right bits is from a V8 sherpa van/ambulance. This was described in the club and on the old board by Richard Stennet.
Hope this helps.

Hahaha....I did the same as Roy. Still, you live and learn ! Most (I am not sure exactly which) BMW or Jags use a 4HP24 box anyway. Perfectly good and stronger box, which will fit to the engine with the correct Range Rover 4HP22 bellhousing flexplate torque converter and spacers. UNFORTUNATELY, they all seem to have an electronic speedo drive and worse still, a "j" gate sports shift electronic gubbins on them too. I dare say the whole lot COULD be incorporated into the Rover, but unless the sports shift can be bypassed somehow, it seems an awful lot of hassle (and expense). You would also have to have a CUSTOMISED rear mounting made and also the propshaft modified. Did you like the way I snuck "customised" in there, just to irritate the purist.... ;D
As Roy rightly says......the only setup that will fit straight on (except for the rear mount, propshaft, and gear selector) is the one from the Sherpa V8 ambulance or police van, but these are almost impossible to find. I have got two of these and theres no way I would sell them because of this.
I have just had a good idea though, all I need to do is get hold of a Range Rover gearbox ! You can do anything if you try hard enough !

If anyone is interested, I have a spare ZF 4 HP-22 on the back of a Rover V8 from an LDV ambulance. Numbers are:
Engine: 26G 00788B. CR 8.13:1 Autobox: ZF 4 HP-22 Getriebe Nr (gearbox No.) 1568721 Stucklisten Nr (Part No. I think) 104301 317
Both are working fine. Will split if needed

I am in the process of getting organised to put a ZFHP22 into my P5B. I will post more details as things progress.
I've found a guy who will basically custom build me one, with RR bell housing and torque converter, to bolt straight to my engine, and my choice of extension housing from BMW, Volvo etc. He will also deal with what seems to be an inherent problem with these boxes ie; their tendency to burn out front clutch packs.
As far as I can determine, the Sherpa units were never sold here in Australia, so this seems like a good alternative to me.
