I have recently had to change the water pump on the V8. I am naturally loathe to bin the old one and intend to fit a kit to it. After ordering a kit from JR Wadhams' web site, an e-mail from them tells me that they do not sell kits. I have subsequently found a web site that does deal in the bearing spindles and, once I strip the pump, will be able to identify which one to purchase. However, as the seal is also u/s, this needs changing but I cannot find anywhere that sells them, individually, or as part of a kit. Anyone out there know of a source?

Buy a new one and dont be so tight. The old one will likely be warped even if you get it to seal properly. That is unless you like to live under the bonnet. If people like JW were unable to make a living it would be the worse for us all.(insert big fat smiley here)

Richard I have tried this in the past, and its always the seal thats the problem. It will leak unless you have access to a press to install it. If you use sockets, tubing, hammer, vice etc you will mess it up.
You can get seals from.......... oh sorry, its a secret !
I remembered what it is. Its called a spring loaded mechanical seal, and a bearing stockist should be able to help......maybe?
They are made by John Crane international and Vulcan Engineering amongst others, but knowing the size and the spec will be the problem.

And I'll bet you 50 pence that you will break the impeller trying to get it off !

Guys, The really niggling bit is that I have changed water pump kits more times than I care to remember, including alloy ones - and never had one go wrong on me. However, that was in the days when such kits were easily sourced. Part of the "joy" of owning a classic is that it is possible to repair almost every part and my time is free. I realize a press is required and that regular pullers will not suffice. It seems a shame to just bin the pump for the want of a little effort. It will also allow me the luxury of a spare water pump. As for supporting JW, I have done more than my bit here and spent quite a substantial amount of money with them so far (only owned the car a year) but have not been overly impressed with some of their wares. Notwithstanding this, I still see them as my main source of spares but not the be all end all.
