Not not unless one of the unions is undone as it will be held by vaccum. It may release if its left standing for several days as like the fluid in the torque converter also, it takes this time to drop below the centre line. Its impossible to fully drain the converter without removing it!

Its often on the bottom or side of the sump pan but it can also be on steel parts of the gear trains etc

You migth be referring to an entry I made way down in a posting under "gearbox leaking" . I had a leak that meant that the car could stand for quite some time and the suddenly spill a fair amount of oil. And then it could stand again for a while and the spill again.. - I took off the pan and replaced the gasket and I also replaced the small seal at the selector-arm. This little seal was very difficult to reinstall with the box in situ, so take care. In the P6 workshop manual there is a notice that leaks at that little seal is common, and it will appear as though the pan-gasket is leaking because the fluid will sipple down to the pan. - Mine seems to have stopped leaking after these corrections...
