I have been given a nearly new timing cover with oil pump, it has the cutout for the petrol pump blanked out but mounting holes for the pump! which is fine for me as I am fitting an electric pump, the oil filter screw is the correct one for P5b what I am wondering is the pump a higher volume type and what year/model did the change take place

It was never on P5B's - I think it was on the introduction of the SD1 in 1976 as this is definitly a better pump

Hi Phil I wondered if it was SD1 I have had a good look and I dont think it has been on an engine but it soon will be! next challenge to find some XL30 at a resonable price for 25Lts

This will be an SD1 pump. The gears are deeper and pump more volume of oil, plus, it has an extra support for the pump drive shaft.
The downside is, you will either have to change your distributor, or the gear on the bottom of it, as they are different. The pump shaft on one has a tongue on it, and the other has a slot (cant remember which is which offhand)
Whatever you do, fitting the later housing is well worth the effort.

Well I have a nice new cover with a blanked out petrol pump orifice measuring the casting on the two covers makes it more confusing they are the same

Brain now in gear pump is bigger plus the dizzy did fit as it would but two shafts of the same sex won't drive! SD1 no doubt about it! (new glasses from optician brain recharged) decision to refit my old timing cover or fit a new dizzy! went for the new dizzy got one off a 1990 Sherpa complete with coil, another strip, clean and rebuild! well at least I have electroinic ignition to go with my new specs! anyone need a 1969 or a 1973 dizzy in great order with 3 sets of new points??
