Could someone clarify that the SD1 had unleaded heads fitted to all of the 3.5 litre cars, i want to use a set for a p5b. The doner car is a Vanden Plas A Reg Thanks, David Green

Yes, all the SD1 V8 heads can run on unleaded, even the early ones.

I reckon unleaded is ok for all the heads even early ones, as they all have hardened inserts fitted anyway, as Aluminium is not up to it. I run a 1973 Triumph Dolly Sprint everyday and have used unleaded for years, no problem with VSR

I agree and have done it. Its just that Rover did not recommend for P5B's (although it did for Range Rovers of the same period, probably to avoid claims. Aluminium heads have to have seat inserts but some are only soft cast iron, this was never the case with the V8 heads though.
Its the octane reduction that causes the problem as retarding the ignition to prevent pinking reduces power outpt and smooth idling but each engine is slightly different so trial and error is the only way
