Apologies if this has been covered before, I think it has, searched but can't find anything.
Will a bw65 fit the P5b? The dimensions are the same. I think the 65 uses a cable for selection instead of rods.
I believe the tails are different. The P6 bw 65 has a different mounting bracket. Will this cause problems mounting the box to the subframe on a P5b? Is the bracket different? Will another bracket do?
Has anyone fitted a later bw65 to a P5b???
Can anyone help
I know that someone has fitted the 4 speed ZF box which is huge
Any help would be appreciated
My coupe has a bw 35 fitted the parking pall is not great and it leaks fluid then sometimes spins in gear until more fluid is added.
All gears work and change/ kick down works as does reverse
thanks chaz

Hi Chaz, you may be better off finding someone to service the box and replace the pan seal, adjust the bands if required etc etc rather than messing about changing boxes. Big Kev.

I agree - there is nothing wrong with the BW35 for normal use in the standard 3.5 V8.
Some have put the ZF-HP4 in successfully

Hi guys I agree with what you are saying However I am changing a tired engine so engine and box are coming out and I am putting in an sd1 vittesse unit running carbs this has a reconditioned bw65 from a p6 attached. This could just go straight in but will the 65 fit in the P5b ( will the gearbox mounting mate with the P5b mounting from the subframe) Does anyone know if this will fit? chaz

Never tried it so I don't know, but making up a new mount will not be that difficult in the grand scheme of things

Are there any new ideas/comments/experiences regarding the swap of a BW35/BW65 in a P5B?

Hi Chaz, a BW65 into P5B is something I've thought of but not actually got round to doing. Should be possible though. I would use P6B selector cable and the lever if req'd, plus you should be able to make a rear mount from normal P5 and P6 bits and maybe a little fabrication. Cooler pipes will need modification.P6B ones should fit and do the trick. The only problem I can see is if it has to come out in the future, you wont get gearbox & converter housing out thru the trans tunnel into the car, and it may not come out from underneath without splitting them, you won't really know till you try it, but you may end up removing eng. & box just to get the gearbox out. Good luck! Incidently if you need work done on BW35 & 65 I can get it done. Thinking about it logically, BW35 will interchange between P5B & P6B, and you can swap a BW35 for a BW65 in a P6B,so why wouldn't a BW65 go into a P5B. And you should be able to do it using all standard Rover parts(unless there's something I've forgotten!) Just make sure the BW65 you're using is from a P6B, not SD1, as the tailshaft housing is different.

Hi everyone. I read with great interest in this thread that some have successfully transplanted a ZF HP 22 4 speed auto into a P5B. I am getting seriously close to going ahead with such a project and would greatly appreciate any information or tips from people who have already done it.
Intial measurements indicate the following:
-The ZF is longer, but narrower than the BW35 -The ZF bell housing (in the Range Rover version) is about 40mm longer than the BW -The ZF extension housing (on a BMW version of the box) is much shorter than on the BW
All of this means that the overall length from front of bell housing to tailshaft flange is almost the same. The ZF, with RR bell housing and BMW extension housing, is actually marginally shorter than the BW; so... the box should fit.
I think some modification of the gearbox cross member will be required to clear the ZF sump. I'm hoping all that will be needed will be to grind the flange off the front of the rear crossmember, and fabricate/modify a new rear mount. Of course issues of speedo drive, kickdown cable, selector etc will all need to be attended to.
I'm also looking at putting an edelbrock manifold and gas research carby (Australian product) and extractors on; if I can find some that will fit...
And my power steering is leeky, surprise surprise, so will also be investigating alternatives. I have heard of people using a ZF power box from a pre rack and pinion Volvo. Apparently they are much smaller and have much better road feel..
Any comments/suggestions? Thanks.
Stuart (from Melbourne, Australia)

With regard to the PAS, if you trawl through (or search) the various posts on the forum, someone has fitted a BMW PAS steering rack, I'm sure it's mentioned on here somewhere. So I had a look and it's in the gallery, posted under "my p5" and belongs to 59fan (looks very nice too, by the way!)
