I've been experienceing engine rumble on a genuine 73,000 miles P5b on cold and hot start up. Perfectly quiet running mind. Today I took the sump off the oil strainer was clogged full of best described tar, I've cleaned it and and hopeing to fit it back and try it. I have taken the first main bearing down, it was fine, I gather start rumble is mains rather than big ends What is the general view on this, will I cure it?

Not good I am afraid low miles/no regular oil changes is VERY bad for these engines. You could try engine flush then diesel oil to clean it out but it seems a rebuld is called for.
Have you checked the oil pump and changed the filter as a sticky relief valve is possible

I did some futher investigation today, the big ends are fine. The mains furthest from the oil pump are showing a bit of copper. I will replace and job done Hopefully

Good thanks for letting us know - maisn usually last well but not if oli is not changed regularly
Beware broken setscrews holding the pump - soak for a week in Plus gas (not WD 40) and if they still seem tight try heating and then soak again and you might be licky and get them all out without them breaking

New water pump on way, whilst pump was out realised bearing for alternator a bit noisy, so that will be stripped and re-fitted next week. I was getting my P5b Saloon ready for sale after 9 years and very little use, but reckon I may have to keep hold of her now everything is A1 . She can be seen at www.sbcars.co.uk

Nice looking saloon in Admiralty Blue. It needs the correct P5B overriders to make it complete. The ones fitted are from a 3 litre. Are the back ones the same or are they correct?

You are correct, it had the wrong overiders front and back. I met someone locally who had 2 sets of P5b overiders and will change them. However I reckon the earlier ones are more suited to the car, rather than a BL add on.
