I was told at the MOT that my tyres will need replacing soon.
I've been reading messages on this and the old board but these have left me totally confused!
Can some kind soul please tell me what I should get. Are places like KwikFit likely to stock suitable tyres or will I need to go to somewhere special?
Many thanks, Keith

Not Kwik fit - but suitable tyres are available for all pockets and tastes at Vintage Tyres and North Hants Tyres both X Plies and radials. Longstone Garage had a supply of Michellin X's at approx £70 each incl fitting or delivery!

Thanks Phil. So if I got something like the 185HR15 Vredestein Classic Tyre they would fit OK?

Yes - they are slightly lower profile but I have used these before and they are OK. 205/70 SR15 are also suitable but are wider and give better roadholding and heavier steering but do not look as original. If you can get them I think Kumo's are just as good but they have stopped making them. Hankook make some as well and these look very good so far but I have not tried them
Some say Avon radials are the best but they very expensive and I must say I am not impressed by either the roadholding or waer. A full set of these (5) were fitted by the PO of my P5B at great expense and now only 3 are any good and at that rather poor.

Thanks again Phil. I saw the Hankooks on the Longstone site but was a bit put off by the fact that they are only half the price of the Vredestein. But, as the car is not my main vehicle I may go for these.
Thanks for the tip about Avons as they were one of the makes I was considering.

Kumho promised to make their excellent tyre again but have not done so and supplies ran out a couple of years ago. The Hankook is very good and several members are using them without problem. They are not imported in huge quantities so supplies sometime dry up. Price is usually around £40. You can buy 6 ply van tyres from Kumho for very sensible money but they are supposed to be too rigid for a car however I discovered only last year that I had run my green p5B coupe on 6 plys for 12 years and it handled better than my other one on 4 plys so I am not now too sure. Perhaps someone would buy a set of 6 plys and do a proper test? We should all be so lucky! There is no legal or safety problem with running a car on 6 plys and as the cars are so heavy it might be a good idea. Vredestein are very good and the price you have is lower than I have seen since Vintage Tyre Supplies tied up importation of most makes. I have been asked for up to £150 per tyre.

I would agree with Phil about Avons. I had some on an XJ6 years ago and they were awful, and my boss had some fitted on his Volvo V70 T5, and very soon had them unfitted !
Dont worry about Hankook.....they are fitted as original equipment to Ford amongst others, and we have them fitted to our works van, and I would recommend them.
I have used Kumho tyres too and would recommend them too.

Iv'e recently fitted Hankooks all round and they seem OK . In the Midlands they are stocked by the " Mr Tyre " chain at about £50 .

Try www.etyres.co.uk. They are reasonable and will do the job at your home, including balancing and taking your old ones away. Richard Southampton

I have just replaced the front tyres on my Supersnipe, they are 195/70/15's. The local tyre place took the order on the Monday morning and I had a phone call at 0920 the next day to say they were in and ready for fitting. They are Kumo Power Star's which match the rear ones and the cost including valves & balancing came to £94.00 which I thought was excellent. I have yet to replace any on my Rovers which have Vredestein on the front and Kumo's on the back. I agree that 'Kwikfit' are a dead loss as they only cover modern Euroboxes.

I have used 6 plys for years without any problems, after very poor experience with Kumhos - they do not grip like Michelin. Kumho perfomance was just acceptable at 36psi - sidewalls are too weak.

Maybe I don't slow down for corners as much as everybodyelse? I've always thought the extra weight on the front of the 3 litre made a difference.

The extra weight on 3 litres does make it understeer noticebly more than the V8 perhaps it because the steering is heavier and has more feel? - I take corners fast enough without making the ride uncomfortable and more than sufficent to keep up with normal traffic.

I just thought I add my limited wisdom to the tire question. I have now fitted Pirelli 205s, which in my opinion look great. Their road holding is excellent and I have not noticed any difference in the steering (at least not a negative one). Admittedly, they weren't cheap at about £90.00 a piece at Kingsway Tires here in Cambridge (who provide a first class service, by the way) but for me it was worth it. Peter
