Up to the V8's the rear cylinders were smaller at 5/8ths rather than 3/4 inch bores. Not certain which those part numbers relate to but either sort are rare

Thanks for the info,
I need to replace or rebuild my wheel cylinders.
I notice that they cost around £50-60 each when similar ones for land rovers cost £12. So I wanted to cross refer the part numbers.
If it is down to the thread on the union then I would make up an new pipe.
Where does everyone else buy their wheel cylinders? JRW?

Land Rover cylinders are completely different as the brakes

The numbers may be incorrect then they are from my 3Lt parts book and covers up to the Mk3 so if they are incorrect "sorry" Arthuy! its a few months since I rebuilt mine but I seem to remember on the box of seals it said 66 to 73!? you can use Landrover shoes they cross reference. Dave Green may be able to help you with cylinders but I would still rebuild them!

Thanks for that,
I know that the land rover cylinders are different I was just using them as an example of difference in cost. I would fit a part that wasn't correct as that is just stupid.
i have been working on old cars for awhile and am amazed that the same part used on a different car can be significatly cheaper. especially from the main rover suppliers.
I contacted past parts and they can do next day service refurbment of my cylinders them for £44.43 inc vat each plus postage. JrW want £55 plus vat and carriage.
Out of interest does anyone actually know if another model of car use the same wheel cylinders?

No as far as I am aware only P5B use this type - 3 Litres and late P4's use the same rear ones

I bit the bullet and got the callipers and wheel cylinder refurbished by past parts. I got both fronts stripped and teflon coated pistons fitted, wheel cylinders wheel fitted with stainless steel sleeves and pistons. I also got a set of brake hoses and a selection of unions. The total including delivery and collection was £343. well worth it in my opinion. A couple of picture before and after, more photos in my web link. Colin

They look nice Colin and I am sure they will work fantastically well but to be practical all my brake refurbishment including SS pistons all new seals, nipples etc etc came to under £140 including vat this included splitting and chemical cleaning the calipers and the postage of the pistons from the USA! I suppose it's all down to time

was that just for the fronts? My rear cylinders got bored out and fitted with ss sleeves and pistions. there is no way I could have done this at home.
I would normally of just re-sealed them myself but partly down to time I went for the professionals.
brakes are one thing I don't mind spending money on. The orignal quote was a bit less than the final cost i.e the wheel cylinders I was quoted £37.62 in vat but they are done now and I am pleased with the results.
Have you checked out the JRW price on brakes and he wouldn't do the 2 way postage for £6 either.
Colin
The break down of costs are
£83.89 for the front x2 £41.51 for the rear x2 £27.66 for brake hoses x3 £8.20 for various new unions £5.95 delivery and collection
Then of course the hit you with £51.21 vat.

My rears were ok Colin bores were good so rubbers all round if they needed it I would have made SS sleaves, my price didn't include pipes which I got off ebay for £12! good old Ebay! but I have plenty of time which is what it is all about and what costs the money

Just out of interest, the rear wheel cylinders can be bought brand new from 'POWERTRACK', but they are £75 plus vat. Seal kits for the same are £12.50 plus vat.

Hi Colin Are yours completely shot? Mine looked bad until I cleaned the dirt and grime off and underneath they were like new. The boot is a complicated piece of work and I have never seen them available. You can get seals etc but rarely "one off" specialist items.

Yes, and their rebuild costs are a whopping £85 plus VAT I need to have my n/s cylinder sleeved and a stud renewed and have been quoted a far better price from Past Parts who seem to do a good job. There is a "typo" in the 3.5 workshop manual supplement as it says the rear wheel cylinders are 3/4" diameter. This should read 7/8" As a matter of interest "new" cylinders are no longer available from Past Parts and they don't intend to get any more. They will be offering rebuilds only in future. There has been a deafening silence to my own thread on brake cylinders and no response to my couple of questions about the hub seal in that thread. Have I bored everyone half stupid?

My wheel cylinder and some new seals sent to Past Parts on 27 September by RD has not turned up and is missing presumed lost I'm glad I stripped it first. Past Parts have a spare n/s one and will use that one to rebuild, they are very helpful. I will now put a claim in for compensation with the PO they are bloody useless

You should have used their collection delivery service, it is about £5. courier picks it up and drops it off.
