I have nearly finished the simple job of changing the water pump!!! Had to remove the timing cover (and all that goes with it) to tap out the broken threads left in the block. Also had to remove the sump as (correctly pointed out to me in a previous posting) the sump gasket breaks when the timing cover is removed. Now its nearly back together I need to prime the oil pump. I have done this before quite successfully by using a drill with the blade of a screwdriver in the chuck to engage in the pump drive (after removing the dizzy - the timing was lost anyway). Being silly (as I sometimes am) I forgot to fill the new oil filter before screwing in place and now can't undo it to rectify this. If I prime the pump as described above, will the oil drain back into the filter causing it to fail to self prime when I start her up? It will take a while from when I've primed it to when I've put the dizzy back, set the timing and am ready to fire her up.

If you have'nt removed the pump you do not need to prime it. I've just taken my sump off cleaned everything and refitted, no re priming. Just took 10 secs to get oil pressure.

I've had the timing cover and oil pump off as well so pump is completely drained.
