I have just finished putting my 72 Coupe back together after changing the water pump. I had to remove the timing cover and sump as the water pump bolts sheared off in the block. I have cleaned all the sludge out of the sump (what a horrible job) and changed oil & filter 15/40W. After returning from the Eastern region rally on Sunday the oil light flickered on tickover (its never done that before). Today the oil light seems to be coming on even when you have your foot off the throttle when travelling along. The guage sits where it always has just below the mid point when travelling at about 60mph and at fast tickover with "N" selected it sits just in the green sector. Is this just a problem with the sender for the light or something more sinister? Can you change the sender without draining the oil? Hopefully David Green (always a good source of spares) will have a spare sender.

You have an oil pressure guage that works and oil pressure is OK, go with that, get yourself a new sender or disconnect it Did you clean the oil pick up strainer too?

Neither gauge nor oil switch are very reliable - when hot with a low idle its normal for the light to flicker. Change the pressure switch and check idke soeed as too low is not good anyway
15w/50 is a better oil to use with these engines unless recently rebuilt

These cars seem to be self healing. I drove home last night with no sign of the oil light even on tickover with the engine hot. I will probably fit a replacement sender just as a precaution.
