Have finally managed to get my P5b started and she idles beautifully but after a quick blip on the throttle she wont return to idle, the revs stay higher. All the cables and linkages return to the idle position on the stops but the revs still remain high. switch her off and then on again and the idle returns to normal and the whole process starts again. Can anyone help please

Are you still using the AED?
Have you got the right oil in the daspots and are the pistons free to move

Is it still fitted with HS6 carbs or have they been changed to HIF6?

No AED. Has two choke cables, have backed off both choke stops so they are not affecting it. Dashpots have engine oil in them, have also tried with them dry and pistons are free . Dont know which carbs are on it, whats the difference?

HS6 carbs (standard ones) have the seperate float chambers, HIF6 (non standard would have originally been fitted to later P6B and SD1) have the float camber in the bottom of the carb body

Thanks, standard carbs it is then, as have only just stopped them washing my feet in petrol every time the float valve sticks. Its a 1968 p5b saloon.

Right that blows the theory I was working on clean out of the water! All I could suggest now is maybe the butterflies need centralising. Or the butterfly spindle has worn the carb body.

Apart from all the foregoing a worn distributor can give varying dwell on earlier V8's which is why Rovers changed the set up late 71. Worn butterfly bushes can be temporarily sealed with silicon around the spindle (outside!) to prevent air leaks.
You do seem to pick them!

I assume when you switch off, and when you re- start the idle is back to normal, that you don't touch anything but the ignition key? (no adjustments to carbs, cables linkages etc.or pump the throttle pedal?) If it's just key only, I think this is at the heart of the problem, as it seems to rule out any sticking of the various linkages. The symptoms you describe are exactly the ones that caused a warranty recall on the SD1, which is why i mentioned the possible carb change. As you won't have the poppet valve that caused the SD1 problem, I would suggest you look for something that can cause air to bypass the butterfly. Having said all that,it could be as sugested, a worn distributor, varying the timing to increase the tickover then returning to normal when you switch off.
