Hello fellow members i wonder if you can help me. I have had to replace the water pump on my 1971 saloon and while removing the bolts holding the pump on one of the longer bolts( the lower one on the right if you are looking at the front of the vehicle) has sheared off and the threaded part of the bolt is still situated in the engine. Firstly is this a common occurence and secondly do i need now to strip the timing gear and distributer etc off to get to the rusted up thread. My first thought is that i could leave it all in place and just drill out the thread and fit a new bolt hoping that it will cut a new thread or i may be lucky and drill out the majority of the tread anyway if i am careful. Has anyone any experience of this problem and could you please advise me of my next course of action.
Many thanks Chris Discombe( Torquay) ;D ;D ;D

It may call for removal - equally it may just hold on the remaining ones. all you can do it to try it. If there is nothing left to grip after removal of the front cover drilling and retapping with a helicoil possibly is OK. If there is a piece left try alternate carefful heating/soaking with Plusgas over a spell This happens quite often - also use SEARCH set for 500 days
