Hi All
I have fitted a recon steering box recently(p5b) hasI am currently restoring the car it only has completed short journeys ie 10-20 miles. On completing approx 20 miles the steering seems to stiffen up. I have checked the belt on the pump and it seem tight enough. I also have a early series one SD1 and the steering pump physically seems exactly the same does it operate at the same pressure. I fitted a new filter when |I changed the box and cleaned everything out.
Many thanks Karl

Could well be the relief valve in the pump operating early because its worn/got grti in it.
The pump is a standard Holboune Eaton type used on many cars of the 1960/70's but whether relief valves were all the same its hard to say. Very likely they are different especially as the SD1 is rack type box. Austin Westminsters had the same pump and old fashioned box so one of these could fit?
The pump is likely to be past its best anyway so a reconditioned one is advised when you fit a recon box
