Can anyone help. I have a 73 coupe which i got with some spares. the whole thing is slowly going back together. the power steering box i think leaks from the oil all over the surrounding subframe. I do have a spare, is there anyway of checking for leaks be fore refitting original or the spare.

Martin, I imagine the only DIY way would be to first clean the whole area up, including the hose unions and then run the engine and work the steering. For the test I would suggest leaving the wheels on the ground to ensure maximum pressure to components. Don't forget to also clean the bottom of the timing cover prior to test as the front crankshaft seal is prone to leaking. I am assuming of course that your engine is in running condition. Good luck Richard Southampton

No - the only way of testing secondhand units yourself is to fit and try them - the highest pressures are generasted with cold oil on full lock when car is stationery. If it passes this test the seals are OK although there could be wear in components but its unlikely.
It may also be a stuck pressure relief valve in the pump giving too high pressures - this can permanently damage the seals
