This is probably a silly question but does anyone know what type of fluid should be used in the brakes. Will the rubber in the seals dissolve under the pressure of modern synthetic fluids? What is the correct stuff to put in the system when doing a full fluid change?

Its not a silly question using the wrong sort is highly dangerous
Any modern spec dot 3 or 4 or above mineral fluids will be Ok. These have to compatible - if not sure check out with makers website.
Its best to replace old fliud every 3 years or so anyway. Do not use silicon unless you have renewed all rubber parts including those in Servo or preferably the entire hydraulics.
