What is the function of the little plastic part in the vacuum line between the dizzy and the carb? Can anything go wrong with it?

It was on the car when I first got it. I never thought about it till recently. It is like a little flame trap with "carb" at one end and "dist" at the other. Made of bakelite.

Sounds like a restricted check-valve used to slow the application of vacuum advance. (Or vice versa - can't remember which). If you blow through it, it should be much easier in one direction than the other. They have a tendency to block up. The only car I've ever had with one fitted is the Series 2 Peugeot 505 GTI and they generally run better if you pull it off and throw it in the bin. I think it was a pollution control measure applicable to that period. I can't imagine why it would be on P5, but there are wiser heads here to answer that question.

Cannot see any reason for this at all either - the vac advance as standard is the best compromise with a electro=mechanical dizzy/ignition and altering would affect fule economy/power/engine durablilty so I would remove it without delay as it probably not working properly anyway

I will take it out then. I have to fit a new condenser anyway.
