On a negative earth car the negative side of the coil goes to the distributor.

That sounds like the theif proof coil protection. Inside is the wire that acts as a ballast resistor so be careful with it. It is possible to carefully transfer the best part of it on to the new coil.
Take care

Thanks Freddy, it was what you said. It took half an hour but I managed to slip the old coil from its weird bondage holding. Im new to this but ive never seen anything like it before, was it a extra or did it come as standard, as I have looked at photos on this site and cant see another one. Anyway, she is alive and kicking again, chhers

Post a picture?
The thief proof set up was standard from approx 1971 - never very reliable and best dispensed with
Hope you have got the correct coil for a ballast resistor (if you have one) otherwise it will not work properly

I don't think you chaps understand. It was never meant to be reliable; it's a thief-proof coil. The component's reputation is what ensures that your coil is never stolen.
