What preload?
Hydraulic tappets are used so no pre-load is required
I would strongly advise you refer to the workshop manual otherwise you may damage some expensive new part

When you say new cam, do you intend to change the followers as well? I hope so as old ones will destroy the cam in minutes.
I also strongly recommend using a jointing compound on the inlet manifold. Any leakage of air here will ruin the emissions.

Vince,
You may need to fit shims. I overhauled the SD1 engine in my MGb about 7 years ago and needed some shims. I don't remember the procedure anymore but believe i received some instructions with the new lifters. Will have a look when i am at home if i still have these instructions. Regards Peter

All the info is on the RPI site, but as it says on there you may or may not have a problem. What it doesn't say is why the need to check it arises in the first place, as it's not set at the factory, and is not a problem (and never has been) on engines straight out off the line. What does alter things is skimming the heads and recutting the seats and leaving the stem of the valve the incorrect height above the valve spring seat. Both of these move the pushrod down into the follower. The use of composite gaskets has the opposite effect.

Use Hylomar on both sides of the gasket, but only around the waterways.

Its just that I had an air leak on the inlet manifold. That is why I recommend it.
