Further to my "Sluggish or just me" post, I have now had the carbs stripped down, rebuilt, and set up. I also had the ATF changed (when it was nice and hot)! The fuel filter and another at the back of the engine were changed as well.
The mechanic is of mature years and seemed to enjoy the jobs, and said he hadn't done any SU's for some time!
The car is now much more responsive, you can tell just by blipping the throttle, and on the road it picks up and changes down to second when it should.
I also got a new under bonnet blanket fitted, as the old one was threadbare. This is protecting my paintwork, as well as quietening the engine considerably.
The fuel consumption on two fill ups (super unleaded 97ron with LR additive) has been 18.1mpg, and 18.7mpg. Both these were before the recent work. Hopefully I will see an improvement soon, as these miles consisted of country driving, not jams, and up to about 65mph.
I now want to get the door seals fixed as they are a bit perished and there is considerable wind noise from the front door areas.

Excellent news that, it's surprising what a difference just small things can make. With a good tune up there is no reason not to get around 22+mpg on a decent run.

I have some photos but have not worked out how to include them - any tips?
I may take the car to Dorset and Sussex in a couple of weeks. That would be a good run. Maybe 22 mpg?!

If you send me your photo's to grroverp5bcoupe@aol.com I will post them for you. I will then go through the procedure to post them yourself if you wish via e mail. It is not that difficult

On the run up to Wigan for the National yesterday, we got 21.9 mpg, which included cruising at between 70 to 80mph in keeping up with the motorway traffic.

WET! But well organised and very enjoyable, especially the saturday evening dinner. Congrats to Geoff and his team for all their efforts.
