Dont run it until you KNOW that the oil pump is turning. Then pack with grease or vaseline. If the valve is stuck you can check it then. Changing things around like front covers and dizzys can lead to a situation with no oil pump drive. I have been there too.

Thats what I wondered humphrey whether the pump tang was not engaged and was just slipping over the pump slot due to the dizzy not being pushed home that would cause a tapping noise as well

Hmm dont think that is likely as the clamp forces the dizzy down. I ran a converted engine for a while myself (no permanent damage that I know of) trying to find why there was no oil pressure and it was due to lack of knowledge and a longer dog drive. I spent a lot of time with my sorry ass under that car.

Never pack the pump with grease to prime it, use vaseline only.

Maybe the driving pin has sheared off and it is driving by friction. Is this the one where you had scoring on the gear cover? While you have the cover off, see if the gears turn. Yes you will need to re prime.

vince it may be worth mentioning to the guys you have fitted a high volume pump the relief valve you have is probably OK with the hole in the center have you asked the pump supplier? this is from the RPI site re their pump upgrade (incorporates the new design relief valve as described) www.rpiv8.com/engine-6d.htm
