Does anyone know the correct wiring on the low-tension side of the coil for +ve and -ve? On -ve earthed vehicles, does 'CB' (as opposed to SW) correspond with +ve or -ve on the coil? In other words, does CB match the earth polarity or the live polarity?
Dennis.

TEXTUnfortunately it can be either as some Lucas coils were made for NEGATIVE earth and perpetuated the CB/SW convention but reversed. In general its better to change to a modern coil but most old type coils with CB/SW will be wired for POSITIVE earth so they will need swapping over for NEGATIVE earth cars. All later coils are universal so "-" always goes to the Dizzy on NEGATIVE earth cars and to Ignition switch on POSITIVE earth cars. The engine will run but not as well with them wrong way round having bad starting/idling/missfire under load. CB stands for "Contact Breaker" SW for "(ignition) Switch.

Rover though in common with many other UK manufacturers believed that +ve earth reduced body work corrosion on monoceques & steel bodied cars.
The increase in rust cause was more likely to do with no rust proofing and the use of salt.
Continentals never bothered and stayed -ve
