???Author: Karl pardoe Date: 1/19/2005 5:33 pm EDT Hi
Currently renovating a p5b coupe which was part restored. Where does the wiring connect to the rear window element, and where does the wiring run to and from?
Many thanks karl

Hi Karl - welcome.
The HRW was an optional factory fitted accessory and used a separate loom from the the fuse box via line fuse into the dash loom and then from the lever console to the boot running underneath the sill plates - just taped to the existing loom/battery cable. It does not matter which side - I have seen both as on V8's the battery cable is on the offside and the loom on the nearside but on straight sixes its the other way round.
You need to connect an earth (ground) cable to the other screen terminal and to the D post metalwork somewhere convenient
Heavy cable is required to avoid voltage drop at least 28 strand type

:oNo absolutely not - the purple is Battery Fused (A1) accessory - spare for jumper for any live feeds required at the back.
Earth cables should all be BLACK unless a bodger has been at work.
I will look in daylight but I think the feed to the screen should be Brown/Yellow

If I remember correctly, the purple wire running to the back feeds the courtesy lamps for the back doors. There's a lucar connector somewhere around the nearside back seat. I put a double connector there and took a feed from it to the boot mercury lamp, which now comes on whenever the boot is opened rather than needing the light on.

The live feed from the switch to the HRW is in fact BROWN/YELLOW. The other side of the HRW is BLACK and should go to earth. The in-line fuse rating is 25 A. However I would suggest you check that the HRW elements are intact by connecting an ohm meter across the terminals, if you get a reading all is well but if not then there is a break somewhere in the element. If it is not the version where the element is embedded in the glass, then it may be possible to bridge the gap, if you can find it, by using solder paint. However, its worth trying to find out first why it was dis-connected in the first place before going too far and getting nowhere.

;)Hi thanks for all the replies. I cant see where the wires connect to the screen from the boot or inside the car I am on holiday next week so I shall have a good look. I am also putting a new rubber on the rear screen next week.
