Has anyone thought about converting the side indicators to LCD but within the existing indicator lense?
Its a conversion I would really like to do but have no idea how to go about it not being electrically minded. However if someone knows what to do and could give me instructions I could do it.
Anyone able to offer advice?

Its a very good idea but LCD's are unidirectional and rely on the lens design to allow some sideways vison. They would look good though and the same principals would seem to apply as for the panel light conversion in the recent Take 5?

I did some checking on the festoon types we need to replace the bulbs normally fitted, and unfortunately, size is the problem. We need them to be about 35mm long and 8mm dia, and at the moment they are too big. I also think that replacement ones complete would again be too big. That's not to say they might get smaller in the future. Panel lights may be different and if they would fit they would certainly light up the instrument panel better than the dismal set up at present. Sometime when I'm out browsing in the accessory shops I'll try and see what is available now.

Before we all go mad on replacing these lamps, I am told that they are not yet approved in the UK. If you do fit them they will attract a fail at MOT testing time. You will have to replace them with the original bulbs to pass the test. The lighting supplier 'RING' is currently awaiting for the approval so they can market them. It is hoped that approval will be given by the end of this year.

Tut tut tut................ All these "Max Power" modifications You will all be wearing hoodies next and baseball caps the wrong way round ! A lot of cars come as standard now with LED lamps, so I dont see any problem with approval.

Its been a while and I must admit I haven't made any real progress on this subject. The thing to remember is I'm talking about the side indicators, if a few LEDs were placed within the original lenses the MOT man would probably not even notice. Plus the fact that the lenses themselves are what need to be type approved not necessarily the bulbs. Therefore brightness is the only issue here. LEDS should be fine at MOT time on that basis providing they are bright enough.

The other problem that would need addressing is that as the LED s draw very little current, they will not "load" the flasher unit enough, and depending on what type you have, could either make the flash rate very high, or just stay on with no flash.
Just like if you have a bulb gone.

Ultraleds.co.uk can offer a replacement flasher unit or resistor for use when indicator bulbs have been replaced with LED's. Do remember that most LED's only emit light forward, not radially like a bulb does. But why re-invent the wheel? It's not like bulbs or flasher units are scarce or especially unreliable is it? Bertie

Actually I have to agree with Bertie.............
Its not as if you are running 250 bulbs in a circuit.
Bulbs are cheap (if you buy from the right place) and reliable. You should get a box of ten for what Halfrauds charge for one !
Most problems are due to either bad earthing or your lamp assemblies being knackered. By the time you have weighed out for the LEDs and a different flasher unit, you may as well buy new lamps !

Well its for 2 reasons. 1) I couldn't get the bulbs locally. 2) I'm bored with the car but love it, so I was considering changing all lights apart from the headlights and fogs to LED. I might even customise the lenses... the whole car will get a makeover eventually... Pimp my P5! lol

Well, I have changed my instrument ligting bulbs for white LEDS and also changed the interior lamps festoon bulbs for the 18 row LED equivalents - brilliant! The interior lights are now very bright compared to the candle type light from the festoons - and the LEDS do not get hot to the touch either. Trouble is, I forgot to order two more for the head rest lamps - I will get some to prevent burning the top of the seats if the headrests are down when switched on accidentally!! Try ULTRALEDS.co.uk the site is amazing and the range of LED torches at very reasonable prices will be an eye opener. Cheers Adrian

I thought you'd sold your car!
Or did you see the light (sorry about the pun) and change your mind.
