It may go out depending on the switch pattern and coil ballast/bypass arrangements. The inhibitor switch is on the near side of the gearbox towards the front just above the sump pan flange. Its just seeable from underneath the car and has 4 cables going to 2 of which connect to the relay at the RHS (looking from the front) of the heater box.
What's the year and are you saying the engine will not turnover? The switch can be bypassed easily to test but its dangerous if you are not careful

Are you sure the battery and its connections are OK? CHECK the earth.

Wow, Thanks for the speedy replies guys !! Yes, the engine does turn over ok - that's what is mystifying me ? (I should firstly explain that the car was standing on blocks in a dry garage for around 10 years before I bought it a month ago.) The car is a 1971 model. The ignition light comes on, but the green oil light doesn't ? The orange handbrake warning light comes on, and that also goes off when I turn to start. ?? I put a voltmeter on the coil feed connection which I could see when I look thru the windscreen. It shows 12 volts until I turn the key to start when it goes off ?? I appreciate your help guys, but I think this could be a bit trickier than I thought. regards, Mike

It sounds like the connections to the ignition switch have been mixed up or in the various bullet connections under the dash - what type of switch is it Column or Instrument Console

Has it still got the original armoured cable to the coil - either the switch has failed or someone has messed up the connections to the switch under the dash and taken a coil feed from the accessory position

Thanks Phil, I think this is going to take me some time to sort out. I'm going to tackle it bit by bit. As I explained under the electrical section today, my son and I bought a 3.5 saloon each, both with problems which are proving to be very challenging. I'll be back !! Mike
