Hi there
My P5b coupe needs a couple of things before it can be driven safely, one is the brakes (which are in hand so to speak) and the other is the windscreen wipers. I forgot to check these out before I bought the car and it turns out the motor is burnt-out, as in the commutator (sp?) is beyond repair.
There aren't many (or any) spares places locally (Auckland, NZ) so I'm wondering if there are any other marques that used the same motor. Alternatively, has anyone modified their wiper set-up to use more modern or commonly available components?
Cheers
Jamie

The problem is that this uses a reversing mechanism to give the Off-Screen park - I suppose any modern motor could be used with a rack drive but you would loose the off screen park.
Its not something I have ever looked at as secondhand motors are plentiful in the UK and are very long lasting if looked after properly.
The comm may be common to other cars with a Lucas motor eg early Minis/ Morris Minors Austin Cambridges etc?

Thanks for that. I was more looking at butchering a motor for it's internals rather than a complete replacement. I'll see how much a motor will cost to ship from the UK.

Hi, You can also consider fitting a "delay" relay in to the wiper circuit. I did this using a delay relay from a Ford Cortina. Very useful in light rain etc., stops a lot of strain on the motor.

I think that the same motor was fitted to a Mk 2 Jag and possibly many other cars of that time

Most Lucas wiper motor armatures of the era are the same except for the drive gear on the end of the armature. However I had a fitting and machinist guy change over the drive gears and away we go no problem. I used one from a p5 3 litre andi used all the rest of the original wiper components. I hope this helps.
