Pat I doubt if the units can be bought other than s/hand now. It's a case of looking out for some tatty h/rests with decent units fitted and removing them for transplant.

My car has these fitted and they might become available. The snag is you will have to buy the car as well . Major changes in personal circumstances might mean the car having to be sold as my storage might not be available for much longer Whoever does buy my car will be very lucky indeed but it is early days yet.

:oThis is a bit of a shock - you have had this years have you not, surely there is a less drastic alternative in the short term

I am at a bit of a crossroads with the car as I just can't get around to tending to it and the MOT expired last June I have a fairly complicated and busy life for many reasons outside the remit of this forum and some recent and serious family illness means that the storage facilities at my parents property might have to go. These long periods of laying up are doing the car no good and I am pretty frustrated by the whole set up. I have owned the car for 27 years so it will not be an easy decision whatever the outcome of the latest crisis. Nobody I know has any facilities to offer and I am not keen on lock ups. All in all, not an ideal situation

I suppose it would be quite straightforward to use a lamp like the interior lamps - they're quite attractive and not too expensive. Can anyone supply a closeup of the original type please?

Pat,I have thrown better headrest away. With lights in them! Why don't you just buy yourself a better set with lights in them,or see big kev, he will tell you where to get some from.

My headrest lamps don't work. The plugs seem to be a tight fit though I haven't gone too far in to them yet (bulbs are both good).
Under what circumstances should you be able to turn them on? Should they always be useable? Do you need the side lights on? Do you need the ignition on?
I haven't yet grovelled about under the front seats, where do the leads join into the loom and are they fused?
Can anyone assist?

I think they originally come from the loom under the gearbox tunnel if you remove the leather covered piece that is on top one screw under the plastic auto escutcheon you will have to unscrew the knob! and you should see where they are connected the wires from memory are a purple and a black they go to a bullet connector then they change to white and red they feed from the same supply as the cig lighter so will be fused through 1-2 fuse 15amp all you have between the red and the white is the headrest lead and the on off switch I will check the diagram to make sure

They do pickup from the cigar lighter and its purple meaning fused battery control. I do agree they are very primitive and not even very effective, especially if being used by a front seat occupant.
There are also red/white cables but these are for the cigar/gearshift illumination which comes on with the sidelights - you could use these although they would then be under the panel light dimmer switch (does anyone actually use this?)

So, theoretically, if my cigar lighter works, I should potentially have power for the reading lamps?

That's only provided that some 'previous owner' hasn't mucked around with the wiring.

I've just had a donor P6 come into my possession with illuminated ET's so I assume they were originally from a P5. As I like the ET's flat on the back of the seat & fully forward the lights would get in the way but at least I have the choice now. Though I would also have to re-colour them & fit the up/down mechanism into the seats.

Not necessarily so, I think the P6's also came with illuminated ET Headrests.

Wern't the P6 a slightly different shape not straight accross the front?

Can't remember, thought that they were virtually interchangeable. (Sorry my minds a bit fuzzy after Sunday lunch, too many glasses of wine)

Yes that is the shape I thought all P6's were that type perhaps they were used as and when
