A mate of mine in the states has an armoured cable on his 48 Pontiac and that started to break down.

Its not the cable that is the problem as teh P5B has a very heavy what looks like a vulcanised rubber isnulation which is yellow. Its at the terminal ends eg coil and ignition switch that cause the troble.
It could be just a corroded bullet connector under the dash (usually from a leaking screen!) There are numerous ones each side of the steering column cowl. Sometimes the sleeved connectors just crak in tow - they look OK from the outside and may even grip the cable but cause intermittent connections
Lectric faults are the easiest to sort, if this is what it is , either by substitution, which has been tried, or direct connection/bypass.
It may even be a faulty dizzy feed/earth tag terminal/rota arm/condensor which fails when it heats up slightly

After having found my distributer to be a bit worn out, I thought I'd replace the complete ignition system. My car , a 1971 P5B, has a thief-proof coil, armoured cable and non- ballast coil. What I'd like to know is the experience other people have had fitting the Mallory electronic ignition. I have read the threads on this and there seems to be quite a problem either with the tacho or starter. I'd like a quick fix , rather than spending hours under the car in the rain. Any replies appreciated, Oliver

After having tried electronics I have gone back to standard points which I find far more reliable (and cheaper!)
