Numptie with keyboard and problem, help or advice greatfully received (68 P5B Coupe) Went out for a spin this morning, as the South is sunny and warm. Whilst queued in traffic a glance at the temp guage sent shivers down my spine, he needle was hovering in the red. Pulled over and sat fidgeting for a while until i felt happy to remove the rad cap. Radiator full and water not excessively hot. Waited a while longer and headed off again, temp guage made its way swiftly up towards the top end of green and after about 5 mins entered red. Pulled over again (process as above). Third time i decided to press on as i was very near home, and the needle didn't seem to moving through the red zone (there was no visible signs of any overheating problems - although i'm the first to concede no expertise). It was at this point i noticed i had also gained over half a tank of petrol since i'd left home. Both needles are registering the same point on their respective gauges when the ignition is switched on (about 80% of their travel).

Voltage stabilser at a guess.(Don't tell everyone about the extra fuel, they'll all want the problem!)

Hmmmmm
So you think my theory about the engine turning water into petrol is flawed in some way..... ;D

Do not use for long with faulty stabiliser as it could ruin the guages as it is they may not record as accurately.
The stabilser cans were used on all sorts of British cars and even Metros of teh 1980's had them. Land Rovers are good source
Solid state ones can be had on Ebay for about £8

Found this old posting that may be helpful:-
I found mine a few inches to the left of the handbrake lever, mounted by a 5/16 AF nut/bolt onto the upper metal rail above the small parcel shelf. In other words run your hand along under the small flat wood facia (right of instrument panel & left of handbrake), palm upwards with fingers curled and you will feel it. Sorry my spelling of stabilizer is the old fashioned way - can't get out of the habit. Probably won't help in "search" Regards Richard Southampton

Hide and seek eh, that'll be fun. Thanks for the clue Richard, car is tucked up for the night and will stay quiet as per Phil's advice until i get the replacement part. If in the meantime anyone sees this thread and can suggest other potential locations for the offending device it would be most welcome.

Some are mounted actually behind the binnacle but its easy to check above the handbrake as most are found there - the LIGHT GREEN cables go to the instruments

Phil sent me photo of it some time ago. I am sure it is the component you are asking about. If you are struggling I can send you another photo of it. (I can't find Phil's one, but I can take a photo tomorrow if needed.) My Temp guage and fuel guage stopped working. I found out that the wires had accidently come off the V.S
It is located under the dash between the h/brake and steering column as already mentioned.

A piccie would be very helpful Glenn, assuming its no problem for you to take.
Whats your prediction for next saturday?? (I'm going no further than predicting a hangover for me on Sunday...regardless)

Here's a dead one I prepared earlier. Sorry about the burn marks on the green wires and the rust on the casing. Glenn's will be nicer. (Probably sprayed Bordeaux Red). So you've changed the spelling of -ize words to -ise too have you? Unbelievable!! Okay, so it was a bit confusing sometimes with some words using an "s" and some using a "z" but I'm sure there were an awful lot more Zeds than Esses. The Americans have used all Zeds (sorry...Zees) forever. So when some bureaucrat in London and Canberra descided to simplify things, of course it made sense to choose the one in the minority and the opposite to what the Amercican did.

(I'm going no further than predicting a hangover for me on Sunday...regardless) Thanks for posting OZ, saved me a job. If we can beat the Aussies and France, who knows?? South Africa probably are feeling the pressure more though. We have to take out Brian Habana, one way or another, and our forwards/scum look awesome. Whatever happens, England did well to make the final. I know this, England are well and truly up for it

If all goes as hoped on Saturday I might be up in time to peer at the Grand Prix on Sunday. If things don't go as hoped, ....I might be up in time to peer at the Grand Prix. I reckon that Habana could run me close in a 100 yards... nippy beggar. Thanks for the words and Ozcoupe thanks for the Piccie.
