One of my next jobs is to replace the dizzy to something more accurate and reliable. Any advice on which is best for my 1970 p5b would be most welcome. Thanks.Andy

Andy you can go for a electronic version of yours but remember the drive from the oil pump is male! female on the dizzy yours is male to fit one of these you would need a sd1 timing cover with pump this I fitted to mine as it has the higher volume output and no manual petrol pump facility otherwise there are a few add on units to replace your points if you do a search on the forum

Why not have a look at the Lumention Magnatronics range.
I got one for my 4cyl p6 for £75, uses the existing dizzy and simply replaces the points and condenser. I will be getting one for the V8 coupe the first time I need to check the points.

I have run Pirhana Optical Ignition for years on a range of vehicles, including Rover and Leyland V8s, Valiant hemi, and early ford six. You simply swap the points plate for the optical plate, fit the appropriate "chopper" disc over the points cam and wire up the model per instructions. Retain the existing coil. Your current distributor will accept the components within the kit. If You have a Jaycar Electronics or equivalent Dick-Smith Electronics store on your side of the pond they may still carry electronic ignition kits (that you assemble) suitable for hall effect, optical, and points driven. If you retain the points the module switches the bulk of the current and uses the points to switch the "power transistor" (now upgraded to solid state) on and off. The current put through the points is minuscule and designed to keep the contacts clean and operating. The points will not pit and all wear is on the rubbing block. If this module is used the system can be "switched back" to full points operation (in the event of the electronic module failing) by simply changing the wires back. I have a small lead in my MG which bypasses the module in the event of failure. Here's the current link and it appears the module has again been upgraded. www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=KC5442&CATID=&keywords=&SPECIAL=&form=KEYWORD&ProdCodeOnly=yes&Keyword1=KC&Keyword2=KC&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=Pirhana Link www.triumphspitfire.com/piranha.htmlGo to: 1. If you speak with Steve at Speed Shack (01895 449066) he will be able to help you. From memory there are 2 types LU183 and LU181 the 183 is for the dizzy plate with a triangular plate and 181 a round plate.Back in 05 he gave me a deal because i purchased 5 lots.Maybe ask around if anyone else is interested...........they are good! ;D There is an Ignitor 2 out now which is even better so ive heard. Big Kev.

I am using the ignitor 11 I purchased directly from www.vintageperformance.com/retrorockets/ and even with the distance was a lot cheaper than the supplier here in NZ about 1/2 price or try here www.aldonauto.co.uk/shop/Send them all the numbers off your Dizzy as they do vary mine was a 9LU-183 the first time they sent me a 9LU-181 and this wouldn't fit so they had a 9LU-183 made for me the first ignitor 11 for my dizzy in the world. even with sending it back and forth to the USA it was still a very good service and now that I check I have had it fitted since June 2004 nearly 4 years and have never had to do anything with it.
