Nice pic Trevor, is that a 'DAN DARE' Comet in the background?

Yes indeed. It is a Comet 4c, flown by Dan Air as G-BDIX, and it was the last Comet to fly commercially. Prior to joining the Dan Dare fleet it flew with RAF Transport Command as XR399, and again it was the last passenger carrying Comet flown by the RAF.

Thanks for the reply Trevor, and another nice pic of both. I would have probably seen this one overfly Hatfield where it was built on its end flight. I was in the Design Office when the the 4c's were being assembled and was involved with the very last one which was for King Saud of Saudia-Arabia. All the interior was done in gold leaf, very impressive. The next job being the Tridents and the HS125.

My dad worked at BAE Hatfield. A big place so the chances you knew him were remote. He worked in the AOG division.

That's interesting Glenn. He would have been in the Spares Division. At one time it was situated at Birchwood, close to the main factory. It was also interesting you mentioned BAE at Hatfield, did he work when it was BAE or like myself when it was De-Havillands, then Hawker Siddeley? I was there from 1961 to 1963 before transferring over to the Manor Road site, and remained there until redundancy in 1987. I remained a Sports Club member until I moved away from that area 10 years ago, and was a member of the Small Bore Rifle Club, and the Model Railway Club.

BAE, In the early days he worked at British Visqueen, Stevenage, then ICI Welwyn. He had a courtesy flight on the new Airbus 600??? when it was developed.

Glenn I certainly remember British Visqueen at Stevenage they were close to Site 'B' which worked on missiles and space products. ICI was of course a household name at WGC. Regards BAE and the Spares Dept ask him if he knew Arthur Cruttenden who was, and still is, a friend of mine. He was easily recognised by his very long curly auburn hair, and glasses. Many years ago he used to drive a P4. What you might call an 'oddball' character, but good fun.
