It has been converted then so if its been done properly ......... The standard switches appear on Ebay for few pounds or Vehicle Wiring Products & Holdens sell them. Do not bother with secondhand. :oYour car is Not original butI will not tell anyone

are you sure about that? i can't see where an ignition switch would have gone on the steering column and all the models I've seen of the same year have it on the dash, too. The light switch is on the right-hand side of the steering column. I really need a new switch quickly for an imminent wedding. Do you know of anywhere in London that would sell these? thanks

Phil is right, yours must have been converted back sometime in its past history. The 'thief proof coil, and switch repostioning, was effective from Jan 1st 1971.

Ok, so it is original if the ignition switch was repositioned in 1971. Mine's a '72.

This means that it would have had the ignition switch on the steering column, the armoured cable and thiefproof coil.
Prior to Jan1971 the ignition switch was on the console, no armoured cable and no thiefproof coil.

well, you all seem to disagree about the location of the ignition switch. Mine is on the console and I think it has always been there.

If yours is a genuine home market 1972 model it should have the theif-proof set up on the column. It may have well been converted aftersale by the first or subsequent owners but could not have been legally sold in the UK for home market only for immediate export. It may of course be a bitsa? There is nothing to disagree with?

Ok, it's on the dash and appears to be a conversion. So any idea which type of switch I should buy? I looked at that Vehicle Electrics shop and they have two of different mm width - for a 19 mm hole or 22 mm hole. Wondering which one... I'd just like to replace the existing switch ideally.

Thank you, yes that's the one I bought. Will fit tomorrow, seems straight forward enough. Anything to be aware of when removing the dash??

You won't have a lot of room you will get a bit more if you disconnect the trip meter from the dash underneath and the speedo just watch all the connectors also the ign, oil etc bulb holders plus have a copy of the wiring diagram

Yes very good tip about the trip reset - it never mentions things like that in the w/s manual!
