A bit difficult to see but this is the starter i put in the new engine. However when fitted, it started the car but made a terrible metalic sound.Upon removal i could see that it was begining to chew itself up and my flywheel. I took it back to "Moss" and they confirmed it was for P5B/SD1/MORGAN etc etc.Anyway i asked for a full refund and ended up reconditioning my original and refitting it (lovely job) I wrapped the new starter as i just had a feeling that it may have to go back, and i knew there would be arguments over the fact i had scratched it putting it in. I purchased one of these from RATSPORT about a year ago. Quite awkward to fit with the engine in situ. It has vastly improved starting and with no untoward noises at all. When I had occasion to have the engine out I did notice that the clearance between the end of the starter shaft and the ring gear on the stator plate is quite small - about 2mm - 3mm. I turned the engine over a few times whilst it was out to ensure no fouling and all was well. I would surmise though that if a stator plate was slightly warped - and I have seen a few in such a state - then that small clearance could well be negated. Richard Southampton
